At this Stage of Life… As a society, we are not very comfortable with the notion of aging, and not comfortable with the older people among us. My intention is to change a mind or two, especially for younger people who may have fears about getting older, by showing it as just one stage of life that has plusses and minuses, like every stage of life!
I used to have a saying posted on my bulletin board. It was from a dog story by Albert Payson Terhune, who wrote fiction based on his own collies. It went:
“Heroism consists of holding on one minute longer.”
I’ve never forgotten it. Neither has my unconscious, which takes over when my mind fails me.
I’ve read enough war stories to know that courage is not about the absence of fear but rather how we behave in the face of it.
Having said that, today alas, through no lack of courage:
A retired peer counselor who is now happily engaged in playing classical piano, writing poems and songs, and enjoying the city as a "free agent." As I head dangerously close to age 80, I find myself fascinated by what I've learned about aspects of growing older -- most of which I could never have guessed, and many, if not most, are good. It's this fact I hope to share with younger bloggers ... that growing old only looks "bad" from the point of view of youth, but that when you're actually there, it's quite manageable and has its very palpable rewards.
